Merula's extra virgin olive oil, is grown, produced, and bottled on their estate, Perales de Valdueza, in Merida, Spain. Merula uses four olive varieties: Arbequina, Hojiblanca, Picual, and Morisca. This last variety of olives is grown only in a few parts of Extremadura and was nearly extinct when the Marques de Valdueza and his advisor, the well-known oleologue Dr. Cristino Lobillo, decided to recuperate it as a fundamental element of the blends produced on the estate. In January 2007, the Cordoba olive oil tasting panel, recognized by the International Olive Oil Council, gave Merula a score of 8.2 out of 9 possible points.
